Interview with Pete Strobl - Dec 6, 2010 (by Eurobasket )

Eurobasket continues to dominate worldwide basketball coverage by providing loyal readers with player profiles, statistics, game recaps, breaking news and updates on former players. For this edition we were fortunate to catch up with former European professional Pete Strobl (206-F-77, college: Niagara) who is now a highly sought after basketball skills development coach in the United States.

Eurobasket: You spent roughly a decade traveling Europe and playing professionally for teams in France, Austria, Iceland, Switzerland, Ireland and Germany. What are you doing, where are you now?
Pete Strobl: I absolutely loved my time in Europe and wouldnt trade any of those experiences and memories for the world. After retiring I returned to America and settled with my family in Pittsburgh, PA.

Eurobasket: How have you adjusted to being back in the states?
Strobl: It was quite different in the beginning. I was born and raised in Los Angeles so obviously it felt normal to be speaking English again, however, there was definitely a transition period for me. I was accustomed to being in the gym twice a day, six days a week and I really missed the thrill of competition. The first few days it was nice to have a break, but that quickly subsided and there was a feeling of what now?

Eurobasket: What have you been up to since your playing days?
Strobl: Since returning Ive devoted myself to sharing my experience and knowledge of the game with hungry and driven players. I'm in the gym almost every day of the week doing private sessions and working with players to build on their strengths while addressing their weaknesses. I've also started a basketball academy for young players called The Scoring Factory and I'm absolutely thrilled with the progress that my players are making. In the summer time, several college and European pros have sought me out and Im working with them to strengthen their games as well.

Eurobasket: When you say your experiences, are you referring to your time playing in America or Europe?
Strobl: Both. I was extremely fortunate to learn from a lot of great coaches along the way. When I work with players, regardless of age or skill level, I teach a mix of both the European and American styles and philosophies. From experience, I know there are positives to be taken from each school of thought. What was once a sharp delineation between the two styles is becoming more blurred as upper level international teams rise toward the caliber of top American basketball. Even the NBA is slowly evolving into a true worldwide conglomeration with the influx of so many talented foreigners.

Eurobasket: Which coaches had the greatest influence on you?
Strobl: That's a tough question because I always tried to take at least something from every coach I've ever had. Jean-Denys Choulet at Chorale de Roanne basically baptized me into the European game and taught me how to become a professional. Joe Mihalich at Niagara taught me how to take whatever struggle comes my way, and turn it into a positive. Hubert Schreiner taught me too many things to name.

Eurobasket: Which country taught you the most in terms of developing basketball talent?
Strobl: I took bits and pieces from all of them. France stands out for the passion and intensity of the game, Ireland stands out for the daily obstacles I faced in teaching youth basketball, Austria became home and I learned about continuity and proper repetition. There was something to be gained from all of my stops and believe me when I say that I took notes.

Eurobasket: How has your business grown so quickly? There's a constant stream of basketball noise coming out of Pittsburgh now and it seems like more and more players are coming to work with you.
Strobl: Word of mouth has been my best form of advertising. I strive to give all of my players exactly what they need to improve their game. Some players need a lot of physical work, some need mental work. I've found my niche in understanding how to differentiate between the two and quickly recognizing what each player needs. Because of that, players that have come to me, continue to come to me and tell their teammates, friends, and even opponents.

Eurobasket: Describe your approach. What is your teaching philosophy?
Strobl: I'm extremely positive and detail oriented. Basketball is an emotionally charged game and I learned the value of properly channeling emotions. There are going to be mistakes along the way, that's natural. A major development for young players is learning from those mistakes as quickly as possible so as not to repeat them. Players have to be continuously challenged and taken out of their comfort zone in order to reach that point where real learning happens.

Eurobasket: What are your goals? Where do you see this going?
Strobl: First and foremost, to help each player that walks onto my court. I want to have a positive effect on them as a person and I want to do everything I can to help them reach their goals as a player. There's nothing that makes me happier than seeing my guys successfully take the next step and reach another level. I love to be a part of the development process in getting players to the top levels whether that is the NCAA, the European leagues or the NBA. I love the process and am enjoying every step along the way!

je me souviens de strobl une rotation execrable qui ns a en partie fait perdre la finale contre hyeres toulon cette année la, ca me fait penser qu'un seul joueur s'il est bien plus mauvais que prévu peut nous faire perdre un titre (petite pensée pr gordon à ce moment la)

Quel nullité ce JDC, il avait déjà failli nous faire perdre en engagent ce nul de Strobl ..... avec tout l'argent que le club avait à l'époque.

M preskovitch du "pere est une ordure" est dispo pour faire n'importe quel métier. Engageons le, il est serbe ça ferait un super coach.

GUGINO exacr. Je crois me souvenir qu il nous avait fait tres mal celui la. Sinon je me souviens que la LNB avait menace d infliger une amende de 20000 francs par match joue par Makthar en finale. Est ce que quelqu un se souvient si cela c etait realise? Ca m avait quand meme bien paru bizarre, on menait 2/0 apres deux victoires a toulon et on avit perdu 3/2. M enfin on s etait rattrape l annee suivante.

La chorale avait fait jouer Maktar ndyaye pretextant ne pas avoir reçu la notification de la suspension de Maktar suite aux incidents qui c'étaient produits à Epinal lors des 1/2 finale des plays offs de prob.La chorale avait perdu ses rencontres sur tapis vert et écopée d'une amende importante.C'était en fin de saison 200/2001.

Oui il me semblait bien que c'était cela. Sportivement le HTV avait gagner sa place en Pro A de toute façon.
